Lead Your Practice To Success
added on: January 4, 2017
THERE’S A Fundamental Difference between managing a team and leading one. Managers manage tasks. Leaders inspire people. As John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more and become more, you are a leader.”
Develop The Right Leadership Skills For Your Practice
Good leadership skills translate across all business endeavors, but we want to share with you the skills we think are most pertinent to owning a successful dental practice and the best ways to apply them.
- Make sure your team understands your mission and how their individual roles support it. Teams are much more likely to give more and make better judgment calls if they know the “why” that drive your practice. Your mission is not something that can be discussed once or delivered in new employee paperwork. It must be reviewed and referenced constantly.
- Speak up! Unfortunately, many dentists in a leadership position find it difficult to voice what they really want from their team. Developing your communication skills takes dedication, training, and practice but it is a leadership essential.
- Build a culture of accountability. We often joke that the dental office is the only place where your boss can tell you do something, and it is okay if you never do it. Think of the countless staff meetings where you have pleaded for the same simple (and valid) requests. Accountability is an extension of good communication and an essential tool in the belt of any leader.
